Priest’s ‘Humans of New York’ testimony wins out on the internet

And can inspire others to come back to church!

The humans of New York recently introduced Fr. Bill Holt, OP, a much-loved Dominican who has been a priest for over 40 years. Through his experience as a pastor, he saw his most vulnerable parishioners and his faith and compassion brought great comfort to many.

Pr. Holt describes a particularly moving episode in which he helped a dying little girl and her family, which you can read about in the post below:

Although the passage itself is very inspiring, the positivity with which it was encountered gave us great hope that those who may not be particularly religious still have a desire to have a relationship with God, and maybe even find their way into a Catholic church.

“Where is your parish, Father?” Your presence, your gaze, your optimism and your kindness… this is the type of religion I want to be part of,“ shared a commenter.

While some people rightly determined Fr. Holt to be a Dominican friar, it was wonderful to see how others reacted to the priest’s work. Another commenter pointed out that he was “A true man of God! Spread love, sunshine and comfort “

While another said: “I have something in my eye. Even someone like me who is not religious can see someone doing God’s work and a good heart.”

This thought was echoed by another commenter, who shared: “I like it so much. He really brings the love of God into the real struggles that people have. He doesn’t minimize their pain, he walks by their side.”

And one person rightly pointed out: “‘Mystery is reality, imbued with the presence of God.’ I’m not a believer, but it’s beautifully worded.

However, it is not only Internet users who are impressed by the Father. Holt. A Dominican friar who knows the priest told Aleteia:

Prof. Holt is universally loved by the young brothers. He is famous for his “Holt-isms” (friendly little councils of priests) and for sending thoughtful notes to encourage the brethren in their work.

He is also a much sought-after confessor. And those who can go to St. Vincent Ferrer in New York, where Fr. Holt is in residence, will be able to hear him celebrate mass, even have him hear their confessions.

While most of us won’t have the opportunity to meet Fr. Holt in person, we can take inspiration from him to have compassion, embrace life, and start our own “sunny files.”
