Hyperlink not working in Word? Try These Fixes

Hyperlinks are very useful for redirecting to other useful resources inside or outside your Word document.

However, sometimes it is not clickable or redirects you to the wrong location. Usually this happens because it is not set correctly or the link is broken.

Luckily, you can fix these issues quite easily and it doesn’t take much time. During this time, restart Word or your system, as sometimes it’s just a simple glitch that’s causing the problem.

How to Fix Hyperlink Not Working in Word

From changing the hyperlink to changing various Word options, here are the various fixes to solve your hyperlink issues.

Check for typos/spelling errors in the link

If the hyperlink does not take you to the location you want, make sure you have set it correctly. The hyperlink may have keyboard typos or some missing characters. You can check the hyperlink as follows.

  1. Right click on your link and select Edit hyperlink.
  2. Select the Existing file or web page tongue.
  3. Now next to the Address field, make sure you are using the correct URL path.verify-web-address
  4. Check if the link works now.

Also, if you have linked to a particular section of the document, it sometimes redirects you to the wrong location.

Typically this happens with a shared Word file where multiple people can edit it, and the section is placed somewhere else.

To fix the problem, you need to manually update the link to the new location. Here’s how you can do it.

  1. Right click on your link and select it Edit hyperlink option.
  2. Select the Place in this document option in the left sidebar.
  3. Now, in the right pane, select the section where you want to redirect and click OK.

Also, the hyperlink does not work when it contains broken links. You can install an add-in to check all broken links in your Word document.

Also, Word does not accept hyperlinks that contain a pound sign. And, if you have one, you may get an error message like “Unable to open the specified file.“Therefore, use a hyperlink without a pound sign.

On the other hand, if you want Word to automatically convert a web address to write or copy hyperlink, you can do it as follows.

  1. Click it Proofing above the Advanced tab.
  2. In the AutoCorrect Options section, click the Autocorrect options button.
  3. Next, under the Auto-Format As You Type tab, turn on the Internet and network paths with hyperlinks check box.automatic hyperlink

After writing or pasting a link, press space or enter to let Word automatically convert it to a hyperlink.

Disable Ctrl + click option

If you have a link that does not redirect when clicked or double-clicked, press and hold the CTRL button while clicking. Check if Word is redirecting you to another location.

However, if you don’t want to hold down the Ctrl key, you need to disable the CTRL + Click on option in Word settings. This way you can jump directly to the location of the link.

Here’s how you can do it.

  1. Open Word and navigate to Case > Choice.
  2. Now click on the Advanced tongue.
  3. Then, under the Editing options section, uncheck the box Use Ctrl + Click to follow the hyperlink option.disable-ctrl-click-word-options

To note : For older Microsoft versions like Word 2007/2010/2016, click the Office button in the upper left corner and click Word options. Then you can continue from step 2 above.

Disable field code

Sometimes you can get the full link address instead of the hyperlink text. For example, instead of Google, you can see {HYPERLINK “https://google.com/”}.

This happens because of an option: “Show field codes instead of their values.” You can disable it to avoid the above problem as follows.

Under Windows

  1. Open the Word app.
  2. Move towards Case > Choice > Advanced.
  3. Under Show document content, uncheck the box “Show field codes instead of their values” check box.disable field codes on word
  4. Click OK to confirm.

On Mac

  1. Launch the Word application.
  2. Click on Word next to the Apple icon.
  3. Then navigate to Preferences > See.
  4. Now uncheck the Field codes instead of values check box.field-codes-instead-of-mac-values

You can also toggle the field type using the following shortcut keys:

  • The Windows : Alt + F9
  • Mac: Option+F9

On the other hand, if you have an Fn key on your keyboard, use the shortcut key Other + FN + F9 for Windows and Option + FN + F9 for Mac.

Also, if you see a hyperlink that isn’t clickable, it might just be text with a Hyperlink character style. So you can use the field codes to determine if the text is a hyperlink.

Prevent links from changing automatically

Even if you have defined a valid hyperlink, Word may change them automatically after you save them. To prevent it, you can change Word settings as follows.

  1. Open the Word app.
  2. Move towards Case > Choice > Advanced.
  3. Now, under the General section, click on the Web Options button.word-options-web

  5. Check if your links are changed when you open the Word document.

Repair the Word application

Although certain Word settings can cause a hyperlink not to work, Word itself can sometimes experience problems. So, you can repair Word to fix your hyperlink problem as follows.

  1. Open the Word app.
  2. Press Windows + X and click the Apps and Features option.
  3. For Windows 10, select Microsoft Office and click Edit. And, for Windows 11 users, click the three vertical dots next to it, then click Edit.
  4. Now select Quick repair and click Repair. Alternatively, you can also use the Online Repair option.online-repair-word
  5. Relaunch the Word application and check if the hyperlinks work as expected.

Update the Word application

If you are using an outdated Word application, the hyperlinks might not work properly. Therefore, update the app to fix these issues.

Here’s how you can do it.

Under Windows

  1. Launch the Word application.
  2. Move towards Case > Account. Alternatively, if the app is not open in full screen, go to After > Case > Account.
  3. Next, click Update Options and select the Update now option.Update word

On Mac

  1. Launch the Word application.
  2. Click on Help in the top menu and select Check for updates.
  3. Now click Update next to Microsoft Word. Alternatively, you can also check the Automatically keep Microsoft Apps up to date checkbox to get Word automatic updates.
