Wilmington- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident this morning on I-95 southbound south of the Brandywine River Bridge.
On August 22, 2021, at approximately 4:13 a.m., a black 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling southbound on Interstate 95 through a construction area and struck a collision attenuator placed in the gore area between the lane southbound traffic and the exit ramp. for Delaware Avenue. The Jeep then turned clockwise and came to a stop perpendicular to the roadway, completely blocking the single southbound lane. After the collision, a 25-year-old woman traveling south on I-95 stopped her vehicle on the left shoulder of the exit ramp to Delaware Avenue. The woman got out of her vehicle and entered the only southbound lane of traffic to offer assistance to the driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Meanwhile, a 2016 GMC Sierra pickup truck was approaching the scene of the collision. The 72-year-old operator could not perceive the collision in front of him due to lighting and weather conditions. The front of the GMC struck the pedestrian in the southbound lane, then the passenger side of the Jeep Cherokee. The two vehicles traveled a short distance south together and eventually came to a stop in the only southbound taxiway, once again completely blocking the taxiway.
The 37-year-old Jeep operator was taken to Wilmington hospital where he was treated and then released with minor injuries.
